UW has reopened a position as an assistant football coach on the college’s job portal, and the ad says it’s an assistant defensive coach. The opening date for applications indicates February 7, with a closing at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

“The job posting terms allow us to use the previous posting and pool of applicants for the same position for approximately six months,” a UW spokesperson said in an email. .

New candidates can apply in the short period when the posting is active again.

The replay of the original ad for the defensive assistant would appear to indicate that Chryst is open to candidates who are not already involved in the program.

The Badgers exited the program for three new assistants, including Sheridan, this offseason. UW announced the hiring of new offensive coordinator Bobby Engram in late January, and Chryst noted in March that the former college and NFL wide receiver would coach quarterbacks. Sheridan’s hiring came in February, and the program welcomed Al Johnson to guide its running back room just before the start of spring training in March.

UW has hired two new outside assistants to the coaching staff ahead of the 2021 season in cornerbacks coach Hank Poteat and running backs coach Gary Brown.

Some of the recent outside hires had direct ties to Chryst. Engram worked alongside Chryst in Pittsburgh as wide receivers coach from 2012-13. Johnson, a notable former UW center, stayed at Madison for two seasons as a graduate assistant for the 2016 Badgers to 2017. Poteat also began his FBS coaching journey as a graduate assistant under Chryst in Pittsburgh for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Brown, Engram, Johnson and Poteat also played in the NFL.

Chryst can only reassign duties with full-time assistant coaches, according to UW. This means that current graduate assistants and analysts should apply for the open position of assistant coach.

Chryst could go the internal route and reassign the duties of coaches already on his team, as he has done for the past three months. UW introduced Sheridan on February 22, when it also announced new responsibilities for two longtime assistants.

Bob Bostad moved from inside linebacker to offensive line duties, a room he coached between 2008 and 2011. Tight ends coach Mickey Turner took on a new off-court role to oversee the program’s recruiting efforts of football.

That said, spring practices have passed, and again, a staff reshuffle would cause disruption. Two assistants who have coached linebackers in addition to Bostad are Chris Haering and outside linebacker coach Bobby April III. Haering oversaw linebackers in Pittsburgh under Chryst from 2012 to 2013 and outside linebackers in 2014 before being hired at Madison. However, Chryst announced before spring training that Haering would take over the UW tight end room, so he’s already been moved once this offseason.

April previously coached NFL linebackers for the New York Jets (2014) and Buffalo Bills (2015-16). However, he mentored and helped guide Zack Baun, Andrew Van Ginkel and Nick Herbig to successful production as badgers outside of linebacker, with the former two now playing in the NFL.

Two former staff players also have experience in defence, although their overall coaching resumes are relatively green. Michael Caputo and Jack Cichy returned to the program this spring as defensive and offensive assistants, respectively. Their roles are not among the 10 authorized assistant coaches, according to a second UW spokesperson.

Caputo, who recently worked for Baylor and former UW defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as defensive quality control coach, has the most experience of the two former Badgers. He spent time as an assistant at the FBS level, coaching safeties at Utah State in 2019. The former Football Writers Association of America second-team All-American also saw time as a graduate assistant at LSU from 2017-18.

Cichy, who recently announced his retirement from football in February, volunteered at UW last season. The former first-choice-turned-NFL drafter has known Jim Leonhard’s defense since he was a player, although he didn’t play in Leonhard’s first season as defensive coordinator in 2017 due of a torn ACL.

Finding replacements within the program also happened in 2021, when Ross Kolodziej transitioned from the team’s strength and conditioning coach to his current role as defensive line coach.

Whoever replaces Sheridan will need to adapt quickly for a key period ahead. A busy season on the recruiting track awaits in June, and UW is expected to welcome many high school recruits for official visits next month.

The program did not update the scheduled start date, currently listed as “on or after February 19, 2022.”
